A drafting sequence you can repeat

  1. Identify the task: record the court, procedural stage, relief sought and documents still missing.
  2. Build the chronology: attach a source reference to each material event and flag disputed facts.
  3. Check the law: confirm the applicable statutory text, commencement, amendments and transitional provisions.
  4. Research the issue: read full judgments, note the relevant paragraphs and check subsequent treatment.
  5. Draft and review: connect each ground to the facts and relief, then check annexures, verification and current filing directions.

This is a suggested preparation workflow. The requirements for a particular petition or application depend on its facts, forum and governing law.

Before relying on a judgment

Read the decision

Confirm the parties, date, bench and case number. Read the reasoning and operative order; a headline or search snippet may omit important limits.

Test its relevance

Compare the procedural stage, material facts and statutory wording. Record the proposition you intend to use and the paragraphs that support it.

Check later treatment

Look for later decisions, larger-bench rulings and review or appeal developments. Record the searches performed and any unresolved point.

Common questions

Can I file a downloaded worksheet in court?

These worksheets organise preparation. Use the applicable prescribed form and court directions for any filing, with the facts and legal grounds reviewed by the responsible advocate.

Is every judgment PDF a certified copy?

Do not assume a research download satisfies a certified-copy requirement. Check the relevant court’s copying procedure and the requirements of the proceeding.

Can I replace old criminal-law section numbers automatically?

Check the full applicable provisions and transitional rules before adapting an older draft. A section-number substitution alone does not establish that the text or procedure applies.
